If you ask the average American what their favorite sport is, you’d probably hear a lot of football . . . basketball . . . maybe even pickleball these days. But believe it or not, some folks are still riding hard for baseball as “America’s Game.”
A new poll asked people straight up: “Which sport do you consider to be America’s Game?” 38% picked baseball. Meanwhile, Major League Baseball is about to kick off its 2025 season tomorrow morning in Japan . . . at 6:00 A.M. Eastern. Because nothing screams “America’s Game” like launching when most of America is asleep.
Football came in close behind at 35%, followed by basketball (10%), soccer (2%), hockey (1%), and golf (also 1%).
So who’s keeping baseball at the top? Midwestern Boomer women. Meanwhile, younger folks down South were way more likely to say football.
When it comes to player personalities, 11% of people think baseball players are the most interesting, 19% say they’re less interesting than other athletes, and 42% feel they’re about the same.
And if you’re looking for the most fan-friendly sport to attend? Baseball wins again—30% say it’s the best experience, while football (18%), basketball (10%), hockey (4%), and soccer (also 4%) lag behind. But the real winner? “Not sure,” at a whopping 33%.
So, does baseball still deserve the title of “America’s Game”? Or is this just nostalgia talking?
