Versatile soap opera star Michael Tylo dead at 72

HENDERSON, Nev. — Soap opera star Michael Tylo, who appeared in “Guiding Light,” “The Young and the Restless” and several other daytime dramas, died Tuesday, his family announced. He was 72.

Tylo who lived in Henderson, Nevada, died Tuesday “after a sickness,” his family announced. The actor’s death was also confirmed by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He had been teaching at UNLV since 2003, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Tylo began as a visiting professor in theater and film at the university, later became an assistant dean for the College of Fine Arts and taught acting for UNLV Film, the website reported.

“Michael Tylo was a beautiful and caring human being -- he was so special,” Nancy Uscher, Dean of the College of Fine Arts, said in a statement. “He was an exemplary friend, colleague, teacher, and artist. He had such a distinguished and rich career, but he was humble about his accomplishments.

“He loved his family dearly and lived a joyous life, but he left us way too soon. We will miss him greatly, but feel deep gratitude about all that Michael contributed to the College of Fine Arts, UNLV, and the world.”

A native of Detroit, Tylo was born Oct. 16, 1948. He played archeologist Quint Chamberlain in 43 episodes of “Guiding Light” from 1981 to 1985 and from 1996 to 1997, according to The Hollywood Reporter. On “The Young and the Restless,” Tyloe played photographer Blade Bladeson in 61 episodes from 1992 to 1995.

His soap résumé included roles as Lord Peter Belton on “Another World,” Matt Connolly on “All My Children,” Charlie Prince on “General Hospital” and Sherman Gale on “The Bold and the Beautiful,” according to People.

Tylo also played Alcalde Luis Ramone on the first two seasons (1990-91) of the Family Channel’s reboot of “Zorro,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
