LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. — A Florida man lost his hand in a fireworks accident early Saturday, authorities said.
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at about 1 a.m. EDT to a residence in Lauderdale Lakes, the Sun-Sentinel reported. In a statement, the sheriff’s office said the man was holding fireworks when one of them exploded in his hand.
When deputies arrived, the victim had already been taken to an area hospital in a private car, the newspaper reported. Deputies found the man’s hand at the site and took it to an area hospital, WPEC-TV reported. Broward Fire Rescue then took the victim to Broward health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, injuries from fireworks injuries rose 25% between 2006 and 2021.
The CPSC added that nine people died last year and 11,500 were injured in fireworks-related injuries.
