There Are Still Cannon Balls In The Walls Of Fort Pulaski From The Civil War

I’m a huge history nerd. I would call myself a history buff, but I never studied it in school, and only got interested later as an adult. So I guess that just makes me a history nerd. And I’m cool with that. Especially when it comes to American history and the Civil War. So anytime I travel, if there’s something historical around, I’m gonna go see it. That or roller coasters. But Savannah is more known for its history than its roller coasters. I think.

Anyway I was up in Georgia for a short stay recently and swung out to one of the many forts in the state, Fort Pulaski. It was built before the war, and once the fighting commenced, it became a major target for the north. When they finally got around to attacking the fort, a recent invention was seriously changing the tide of the war. Rifled ammunition was first used during the Civil War, and one glaring example was the destruction that was way-layed on Fort Pulaski. In fact if you go there today, you can still see where regular canon balls are still embedded in the over 8 foot thick walls. But there’s a corner that was attacked with rifled canon ammo and they destroyed an entire corner of the fort. You can tell because when the north took over the fort, they rebuilt that section and the entire corner is a different color brick than the rest. Check out my gallery if pics I took when I was there.
