With sports being back – Go Bolts! - this weekend will not be a normal Block Party weekend on 107.3 The Eagle. It’ll be a weekend of Stadium Rock blocks while you watch live sports on TV, crack open some Bud Lights and listen to the songs on the radio you would have heard had you been in attendance. By the way, is it Stadium Rock or Arena Rock? Actually, it really doesn’t matter. It’s more than the music played during sporting events. It’s a genre that came to be in the mid-1970s.

As rock and heavy metal really started to take off, those bands became more popular. They started conceptualizing songs designed for massive live audiences. Some of those songs became anthems that will live forever, and two of those anthems come back to back on the same Queen album, “News of the World”.  Let’s take a quick look at one of the most famous anthemic offerings in rock history.

When Queen finished playing Bingley Hall in 1977 the crowd began to sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” a classic football (soccer) song, as they walked off stage. Inspired by this, Freddie Mercury and Brian May began working on two different songs. Freddie began writing “We Are the Champions” while Brian starting with a simple beat or more specifically two stomps and a clap, began writing “We Will Rock You”. Brian’s composition would be the first track on the next album followed immediately by Freddie’s self-confident “My Way” like ballad. Both were so good that most radio stations play them in tandem still to this day.

Not only is Stadium Rock energizing, it is unifying. It can turn 70,000 football fans into one cohesive force known as the “12th Man” giving the home team an advantage. I’ve ranked the top 10 Stadium Anthems below. Check it out and let me know what you think. One day we will all be able to come together again in a stadium/arena setting. Until then turn the radio up a little louder when these songs air during this Stadium Rock Block Party Weekend on 107.3 The Eagle – Tampa Bay’s Classic Hits.
